Natural hair Journey Thus Far

Going natural is something that I had wanted to do for awhile since my Freshman year of College, but I never had the guts to do it. I was fearful because I had went natural before (forcefully) during my junior year of high school. My hair had been damaged by Pan teen Pro-V for women of color so my mom decided to cut it off for me. Even though everyone loved me with the short hair, I felt uncomfortable with myself. I remember just being natural, looking at myself in the mirror and feeling like a boy. Eventually my mom grew frustrated because it was hard for her to comb my hair, and I personally did not know how to take care of my natural hair...I wish I had checked out you tube. So my mom decided to perm it. It was pretty long for that amount of time

I don' have much relaxed pics but here is one from freshman year 2008

My Sophomore year of college I started exploring the thought of going natural again because I was sick of the relaxers and did not feel my hair seriously growing. My hair had been damaged badly by some small braids that a stylist put in with jam, and I also left them in for way to long. when i took them out they were literally dreads. I went to my stylist who conditioned my hair to help me take my hair apart, but there was a lot of breakage and damage. From then on I did weaves, braids and continued using relaxers
during this period I did a lot of research on natural hair. I was thinking about doing my Big cut but was scared, because remembered how I felt the first time i did it. I got my last relaxer on December 30th 2009 and from then I wore half wigs, braids, weaves to start transitioning. I got  a weave at the end of May 2009 and kept it in till august...(it was a pretty good weave). August 6th I took the weave out and Voila, my hair had a lot of new growth (8 months worth  of transitioning). At that point I had to choose to either get a perm or cut my hair, I looked at my head and it just looked a hot mess. My relaxed ends just looked so damaged, so I wanted to put an end to the relaxing process. I was sick of it. I could of waited for my moms to get home and cut it for me but  I was so sick of it so I took some hair scissors and cut it off myself. It helped a little because two of my cousins decided to their BC before me in the month of June.

My parents did not see it coming, and they really did not know about it for a whole week! I wore my head wrap and my wig for a week. Finally  I  had to go to a meeting at school and I decided to wear it out. My cousin convinced me too because she was like "you are not truly natural until you are able to wear you hair out".  The thing is I was comfortable with my self I actually loved my hair but I was fearful of what my family would say. My parents and Uncle were surprised. My siblings loved it though.

My hair has grown super fast since  I have been natural. I've worn wash and gos to school and my schoolmates love my hair. For once in my life I love my own hair! and that is a great feeling! I've only received one negative comment from a black girl from a beauty supply store, I decided to ignore it. I love my hair and that is what matters.

August 6-October 2 This is only about 2 months Natural!!!!

I've been using some you tube recommended products like Herbal Essences Hello Hydration Shampoo and Conditioner. I live in Minnesota and it is cold up here right now, so Now  I am wearing some medium sized braids for my winter protective style.
One of my roommate has been natural all her life, but really had not been taking care of her hair. I was able to convince her to take better care of her hair, and did a protein treatment for her. She just wore her fro out for me yesterday and I am impressed at the new health of her hair. I am also impressed at the growth and health of my own hair. Currently I am looking and researching for a new deep conditioner....so if anyone has any ideas, let me know. I am considering buying a natural deep conditioner -alikay naturals by youtube's balck onyx. So this is my natural journey thus far, I'm enjoying it I will we 4 months next week Monday on December 6th 2010

Get to know me and why I am blogging....

I actually wish I started blogging a little while ago.
So many things are happening in my life now which I wish to record.
I have so many thoughts on some issues and I believe it would help me out personally if  I documented them.
Currently I am a junior in college. Some things I wish to blog about is how I am doing in school, especially my school which is predominantly Caucasian. I probably won't say much about it this semester because it is almost done and also because I am going to be studying abroad in Kenya for my January and Spring term.
Which brings me to the second thing I want to blog about. While in Kenya I want to blog about my experience there also, It will be my first time leaving the country since 9th grade.
When I come back from Kenya in May I will be leaving for Haiti (my birth country).
It will be my first time back since I left when I was four. I don't know if I will be able to blog while there, but I will when I get back.
Also importantly I will also be blogging about my natural hair Journey. I went natural in August of 2010 so I will blog about my journey and experiences.
Mostly I will just be blogging about anything really but those hopefully can give you an idea about some of the main topics.
